Chinese Language and Culture Program

Program Information

Take your learning of Mandarin to new heights by meaningfully engaging in China’s culture and business world. In the summer language and culture program, your Mandarin will progress to intermediate or advanced levels of proficiency through a mix of classroom study and active participation in daily life. The first week of this program takes place at the University of Calgary, and the next four weeks are taught at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

This program also incorporates a for-credit, one-month internship. You will intern at one of over 400 companies in a variety of sectors; these include architecture and real estate, IT, business, legal, engineering, logistics, finance and accounting, marketing, PR and advertising, green technology, media and creative industries, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, NGOs and charities, hospitality, and tourism and travel. Your placement is guaranteed and will be determined based on your top three choices for sectors.

Not only will this internship fast-track your Mandarin language skills, but it will also gain you valuable insight into Chinese business culture – both traits being increasingly sought-after by employers. Plus, international experience always looks impressive on a resume!

Students enrolled in this program stay at a local hotel near the Tsinghua University campus in two-person, single-gender rooms for the four weeks of language studies. For the internship, accommodation is located Beijing’s art district, affectionately known as the “Brooklyn of China.” The apartment is within walking distance to public transportation and shopping, giving you plenty opportunity to soak in Beijing daily life.
